Iowa Newsworthy Photography by Katherine McClure Photography

I PASSED! But not on the first try. Have you ever failed but kept trying anyway? It is not really very fun… but so rewarding in the end! That describes the CPP process for me over the last year. I studied hard. Passed the exam! Put together a portfolio of recent work but didn’t shoot anything special. I failed. And not a little either. 14 of my 15 images didn’t pass. Ouch.

So I got serious. I read all the critiques. I reached out to other CPPs for feedback. I started shooting some images specifically for the compulsory section, and started applying what I was learning to every client session. I wanted to get better. It was hard but I kept pushing myself. The things they were picking apart I had never even thought about before. But all those little things… they take a good image and make it truly spectacular.

I submitted a new portfolio after about six months of focusing on lighting patterns and catchlights and highlight and shadow detail and poses nuances at a level I usually reserved just for competition images. But after holding all of my work to that new standard, I PASSED! You can read the full press release below!

Prairie City Photographer Earns Certification

Katherine McClure of Katherine McClure Photography joins prestigious group as a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)

Prairie City, IA, March 13, 2017 – Katherine McClure, CPP of Katherine McClure Photography in Prairie City, IA has earned the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation from Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

McClure earned this designation after completing an intensive program that measures her artistic and technical competence. Professional Photographers of America currently recognizes fewer than 2,500 CPPs.

“In our house we say that learning and serving are both lifelong endeavors. My journey toward certification was one way I lived that example for my children. They watched me study and work through practice tests before the exam. I used them as models for portions of the portfolio review. They saw how I responded when my first portfolio did not pass. Instead of giving up, I asked for feedback and set to work on improving and now they are celebrating with me on becoming a CPP! Certification was a personal goal, but what I learned will benefit my children and my clients for years to come.”

Professional Photographers of America is the leading body for certifying imaging professionals. CPPs must complete a written examination, finish an image evaluation and adhere to a strict code of conduct. Certification must be renewed on a periodic basis, ensuring continued confidence in the professionalism of Certified Professional Photographers.
