I hate Sorry.
Not authentic apologies! The board game. Ugh.
I was not a competitive kid. Poor eye hand coordination meant I avoided all activities with fast moving spherical objects… and my desire to have friends above all else meant I never wanted to beat anyone.
Seriously, my husband had to buy board games for our family where we all win because I can’t play Sorry - that is a game made to be a jerk to everyone!
But it turns out competition can be a very positive thing.
In my career, competition was introduced to me in a fresh way. It wasn’t about winning over others, or beating them in a negative way - it was about improving my craft against a set of stationary standards.
In Professional Photographers of Iowa, I was surrounded by enough people participating and supporting me, I tried it. In 2016, I entered my first International Print Competition, and was hooked! (You can see my journey here.)
At any Professional Photographers of America event where I teach, I am now introduced as Katherine McClure, Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman, Certified Professional Photographer.
It gives me cool letters after my name professionally
Katherine McClure, M.Photog.Cr., CPP.
But the title reflects years of competition.
Certified Professional Photographer is for understanding the technical aspects of my craft, Master Photographer is for using that technical skill for artistic excellence in competition, and Photographic Craftsman is awarded to those who teach others.
But I need some help! This is my 8th season of competition, and I have a unique idea and short timeline. I am looking for 4 individuals or groups willing to create new art pieces with me… inspired by pieces at the Art Center Des Moines.
I have always said my clients are a unique blend of those that love art AND love their families, so I want to explore that connection more intentionally. Have interest in participating with me? Hit reply and let’s create something inspired, together.
(Just kinda quickly - like in the next 3 weeks ;-)
With love,
Kat
